Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The transformation of local sports infrastructure is now underway as Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado initiated the historic rehabilitation of 17 municipal soccer fields, including both fútbol rápido (fast soccer) and fútbol 7 (7-a-side soccer) facilities. The project commenced with the delivery of the first 10,000 square meters of synthetic turf, which will be used to renovate the initial 10 fields across various neighborhoods.

Unprecedented Investment in Sports Infrastructure

The initiative is part of a landmark 100-million-peso investment allocated exclusively to sports development this year. The program aims to strengthen social cohesion, promote healthy lifestyles, and foster safer communities through accessible recreational spaces.

“We want our children, youth, and families to have safe, well-lit, modern, and accessible facilities. Sports are a right, and we are committed to guaranteeing that right. These improvements align with the New Agreement for Wellbeing and Development in Quintana Roo, championed by Governor Mara Lezama under the principles of the Fourth Transformation, which prioritizes social welfare and justice for all,” stated Mayor Estefanía Mercado.

Scope and Timeline

The fields slated for renovation are located in key areas, including Bellavista, Colosio, Forjadores, Mundo Hábitat, Villas del Sol, Riviera Maya, and Puerto Aventuras. The municipal government aims to complete all 17 rehabilitations before the end of the year, establishing a modern, secure, and free-to-use sports network citywide.

“These are unprecedented actions that will mark a turning point in Playa del Carmen’s history. We are making sports a tool for social transformation,” emphasized the mayor.

The project underscores the local government’s commitment to equitable development, reinforcing Playa del Carmen’s vision of a more just and inclusive city.
