Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado announces city's integration into UN Making Cities Resilient program

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, QR. — Mayor Estefanía Mercado announced that Playa del Carmen has become the first city in Quintana Roo to join the international Making Cities Resilient program, promoted by the United Nations (UN), strengthening its consolidation as a resilient city against risks and emergencies.

During a tour of the Civil Protection facilities, the mayor emphasized that this incorporation positions Playa del Carmen as a resilient city by reinforcing prevention actions, risk management, and response capacity to natural phenomena and urban contingencies.

She explained that being part of Making Cities Resilient will allow the municipality to access international training, exchange experiences with other resilient cities worldwide, and potential international funds, which will contribute to improving the equipment, technology, and operational processes of Civil Protection.

Estefanía Mercado stressed that this administration’s goal is to consolidate Playa del Carmen as a resilient city through a permanent policy of prevention, investment in infrastructure, and professionalization of personnel responsible for security and emergency response.

Furthermore, she affirmed that Playa del Carmen’s Civil Protection currently has one of the best levels of equipment and preparation in the region, strengthening the path to maintain the municipality as a resilient city focused on protecting lives and family assets.

The Municipal Government reiterated that joining the UN program reaffirms the institutional commitment to continue advancing toward a model of safe, sustainable urban development aligned with international standards for resilient cities.
