Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Playa del Carmen City Council is analyzing the incorporation of the Puerto Aventuras delegation into the distribution schedule of the “Playa Llena, Corazón Contento” food assistance program. The measure is intended to ensure families in that community can access benefits directly without having to travel to Playa Del Carmen.

The proposal arises from the need to reduce the travel expenses and time for beneficiaries, primarily senior citizens, single mothers, and families in vulnerable situations, who currently must travel several kilometers to distribution points in Playa del Carmen. The initiative seeks to establish fixed routes and dates for the deliveries to be carried out periodically in the delegation, ensuring more direct and equitable service.

The request was presented to the Secretariat of Social Justice, the body responsible for coordinating the program, to include Puerto Aventuras in the monthly schedule. With this measure, the aim is for the support to reach the families who need it most directly, strengthening the inclusive nature of municipal welfare policies.

“We want the Secretariat of Social Justice to set a date to go to Puerto Aventuras, so that the beneficiaries do not have to face complications to come to Playa to pick up their food basket,” expressed the councilwoman promoting the initiative, highlighting that many families face additional transportation costs that sometimes exceed the value of the support itself.

The “Playa Llena, Corazón Contento” program is part of the comprehensive social assistance actions implemented by the City Council to guarantee the right to food and alleviate the domestic economy of the most vulnerable sectors. Each distribution event includes the delivery of basic food basket products, cleaning supplies, and guidance on other programs available through the Playa del Carmen DIF System.

According to municipal data, the scheme has benefited thousands of families in different urban and rural neighborhoods, establishing itself as one of the pillars of local social policy. In Puerto Aventuras, its extension would serve an estimated population of more than 25,000 inhabitants, which has grown significantly in recent years due to increased tourism activity and the constant arrival of workers from other states.

Local authorities consider that this expansion would strengthen the territorial coverage of social programs and improve indicators of direct service to the population by eliminating the geographical barriers that limit access to benefits. Furthermore, it would allow for strengthened coordination between the Secretariat of Social Justice and the DIF, ensuring that support arrives promptly and without intermediaries.

The proposal to bring the program to Puerto Aventuras also responds to the municipal strategy of development with territorial equity, which seeks to distribute public services and support throughout the municipality. The goal is for delegations and communities with accelerated growth to have the same level of attention as the consolidated urban zones.

In this context, Municipal President Estefanía Mercado has promoted a focus on social justice that prioritizes families with the greatest needs, under the premise that support programs must remain active throughout the year, without depending on seasons or specific circumstances. Through the Playa del Carmen DIF, the municipal government has reinforced the delivery of food, basic medical assistance, and social support, benefiting thousands of residents.
