Playa del Carmen Activates Storm Operation as Heavy Rains Hit Yucatan Peninsula

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Playa del Carmen government activated its Storm Operation on Tuesday in response to heavy rains affecting the Yucatan Peninsula from cold front 41.

Mayor Estefanía Mercado ordered the deployment of civil protection and public services personnel across the city to address critical flooding points and prevent severe water accumulation.

Crews conducted cleaning operations, cleared storm drains, and unclogged sewer systems to improve water flow.

Darwin Covarrubias, head of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Fire Services, highlighted the proactive work and rapid response of operational teams who have worked continuously to minimize impacts on residents and maintain mobility on main roads.

Under Mercado’s instructions, all involved departments remain on permanent alert with constant weather monitoring and readiness to respond to any emergencies.

The city council urged residents to avoid littering on public streets, noting that trash blocks drains and contributes to flooding. Officials also advised drivers to exercise caution.
