Cozumel, Mexico — Pedro Marí Angulo, the composer behind the legendary Cumbia Cozumel, received a heartfelt tribute this weekend celebrating his decades-long contributions to music and culture. The event featured performances of his most beloved compositions, including the titular anthem that has become synonymous with the island’s identity.

Composed in 1960, Cumbia Cozumel marked its 65th anniversary this year. The song, born from Marí Angulo’s deep affection for his homeland, captures the essence of Cozumel—its natural beauty, culinary traditions, and vibrant tourism—through the infectious rhythms of cumbia.

María Fernanda Vargas González, Councilwoman and Chair of the Tourism Commission, delivered remarks on behalf of Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez, praising the song’s enduring impact. "This cumbia has transcended generations and become an essential part of our identity," she said. "Born from his heart and love for this island, Pedro’s music resonates daily in every corner of Cozumel, from restaurants to tourist streets, uniting locals and visitors alike with its rhythm."

An Emotional Tribute

The homage, held at Benito Juárez Park, included a live performance of Cumbia Cozumel by Marí Angulo himself, alongside renditions of his other classics such as "Oye mi canción," "Suelo feliz," and "Cozumeleña." He was also presented with an official recognition for his cultural contributions.

Addressing the crowd, the composer expressed humility and gratitude. "I don’t know if I deserve this or not, but I’m very happy," he said. "I’ve sung, I’ve played—I’ve done it because I love it, because it comes from my soul. I hope to keep doing it for as long as God allows." He thanked his family, friends, and even tourists who gathered to celebrate his work.

Councilwoman Vargas González reflected on the song’s broader significance. "Whether his goal was to capture the spirit of a growing destination, to make bodies move with his rhythm, or to showcase the wonders of Cozumel, one thing is certain: he achieved that and more," she emphasized.
