Patient Escapes Cancún Rehab, Alleges Beatings

emergency services response scene with police and ambulance at night

Cancún, Mexico — A man fled a rehabilitation center in the early hours of Friday morning, alleging he was savagely beaten by the facility's staff. The incident occurred at an annex located in the city's Region 231.

The victim reported that within the same rehabilitation center, patients are subjected to extreme punishments that drive them to attempt to take their own lives, and that some have successfully ended their existence.

Authorities responded to the scene after a call was placed to the 911 emergency number reporting an injured person in the aforementioned region. Personnel from the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit (SMSCyT) arrived at the location.

The uniformed officers interviewed the alleged victim, who stated he had escaped from the annex, where he had been beaten, apparently as part of a punishment administered by those in charge.

The victim asserted that other men who arrive for rehabilitation and suffer the same punishments attempt to take their own lives, seeing no other way out. He explained that upon being admitted, family members sign a waiver agreeing that the patients will not be allowed to leave until their treatment is complete. He alleged that many never complete the treatment due to the mistreatment.

The man was treated for his injuries and transported to a hospital for further medical attention. Authorities encouraged him to file a formal complaint with the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) so that an investigation into the events occurring inside the facility may be initiated.
