Cancún, QR — Police arrested a taxi passenger in Cancún on Friday after she assaulted the driver who refused her method of payment. The altercation occurred on Lak’in Avenue when the passenger arrived at her destination following a previous stop.
The woman took the taxi from Miguel Hidalgo Avenue in SM 109 where she instructed the driver to take her to two different locations, the second being a grocery store on Lak’in Avenue.
When the taxi driver requested payment outside the store in SM 259, she offered pieces of copper wire (for selling) instead of cash. When he refused the wire, she struck him in the head with a glass jar.
Others who witnessed what happened kept the woman at the scene while the man sought police. The Cancún taxi driver flagged down an approaching police car, where the woman, since identified as Hainery “N”, was detained.
“During patrol, agents from the Secretariat of Citizen Security, in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy, noticed a man who, upon seeing the patrol car, raised his hand in a signal for help,” police reported.
“Parked in front of him was a white Nissan Tsuru with green markings from the ‘Andrés Quintana Roo’ taxi union.
“Upon approaching, he informed them that a woman, who was nearby surrounded by several neighbors, had punched him in the forehead. The incident occurred on Miguel Hidalgo Avenue between Bugambilia Avenue and Tulipanes Avenue, in SM 259.
“The man explained that the woman had stopped his taxi on Miguel Hidalgo Avenue, Route 5, near Region 103, requesting service to take her to the end of Route 5 and then to a supermarket located on Lak’in Avenue.
Upon arrival, she told him she had no money to pay and offered to pay with pieces of copper wire, to which the taxi driver refused. She then struck him in the head with a glass jar.”
Police said the woman was detained and the taxi driver was taken to the clinic of the “Andrés Quintana Roo” taxi union for medical treatment.
