Quintana Roo Parents Reject School Backpack Searches

Cecilia Manzanilla Pérez, President of the Parents Association in Quintana Roo

Chetumal — Despite some parents expressing agreement with the implementation of the Backpack Operation in schools, a general consensus has not been reached, particularly due to concerns about students’ human rights, which have been called upon to be respected.

Cecilia Manzanilla Pérez, president of the Parents Association in Quintana Roo, stated that parents should be more vigilant and ensure from their homes what their children bring to school facilities to prevent risks of violence inside educational institutions.

“What has been done is to raise awareness among parents about the importance of checking backpacks from home, before children and youth leave for school. We have that responsibility to verify that they only carry what is necessary for their studies. There has been some concern about cases of violence, which is why we are asking parents to reinforce this vigilance and prevent them from getting involved in risky activities or dangerous situations,” she said.

She indicated that in meetings held with guardians, the possibility of resuming backpack checks has been discussed, but there are still differing opinions, leading to the decision to call on parents to conduct this supervision and confirm that students only bring their school materials.

She noted that it is also vital to accompany them during school entry and exit times due to reports of violent incidents occurring outside. However, since many parents work and cannot be present, they have requested support from authorities to safeguard students and ensure they arrive home safely.

“There have been some situations outside schools when students finish their activities. Although it is important to try to drop them off or pick them up, we know that many parents work and cannot provide that accompaniment, which is why we have already requested more police presence to ensure the safety of students as they return home,” she added.

She further stated that the association is fully willing to collaborate and work in coordination with educational authorities on strategies implemented for the protection of learners, as it is a priority that schools be safe environments.
