Progreso, Yucatán — A structure resembling an oil platform has been sighted for several days off the coast of Progreso, raising concerns among local fishermen and maritime workers who first reported its presence during their early morning outings.
Unidentified Platform Raises Questions
According to gathered testimonies, the platform was first observed at least five days ago by fishing vessels departing from various points along the coastline. While initial speculation swirled about its purpose, unofficial sources indicate the structure is in transit, though its final destination and origin remain unclear. It is only confirmed to be heading abroad.
The sighting has drawn parallels to a similar incident in 2016, when another platform near Progreso fueled rumors of oil exploration by Pemex. However, it was later revealed to be part of an international scientific mission studying the underwater crater left by the meteorite that caused the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
Authorities Yet to Comment
As of now, neither the Port Authority nor federal officials have issued an official statement regarding the newly spotted structure. Fishermen report that the platform remains at a distance from the shore but emphasize the need for transparency about whether its presence serves a technical or scientific purpose.
Some fishermen detected the massive oil rig-like platform three days ago while working in the area, prompting unease among the seafaring community.
Echoes of Past Incidents
The discovery recalls the 2016 episode, when a similar platform sparked oil exploration rumors before being identified as part of a research project focused on the ancient meteorite crater.
Unofficial sources suggest the current structure is temporarily passing through the area. Its exact destination, country of origin, and reasons for its presence near Yucatán remain unknown.
