CHETUMAL, MX — Civil Protection personnel were alerted this morning to the sighting of an ocelot roaming the streets of the Marsella neighborhood in the state capital. Residents have requested monitoring of the feline's activity, as it appears to have attacked several domestic animals.
According to witnesses, the feline has been seen between Enrique Barocio and Gerona avenues, most often at night, when it is supposedly searching for food in trash bins.
Residents of the neighborhood have called on the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) to coordinate with Civil Protection to monitor the animal. Although it has so far shown no signs of aggression towards people, residents have noted that domestic animals such as dogs and cats have disappeared in the area.
Finally, neighbors also reported that sporadic encounters with various wild animals have occurred in this part of the city before, due to its proximity to vegetated areas. They reiterated their call for authorities to maintain surveillance operations in the zone.
