New Taxi Fare Abuses in Tulum Draw Renewed Scrutiny

taxis overcharging in Tulum

Tulum, Quintana Roo — January 9, 2026 – Taxi services in Tulum are once again under public scrutiny following reports of excessive and arbitrary fares charged to tourists, particularly during high-profile music festivals such as Zamná, Day Zero, and Tehmplo.

In a recent incident circulating widely on social media, a tourist documented being charged 3,500 pesos for a trip of approximately four kilometers. The video has spread across multiple platforms, adding to a growing collection of online complaints that describe similar experiences. Travelers frequently report unexpected fares, lack of transparency, and pricing well above what is considered reasonable for short distances within the municipality.

Local business owners say these practices extend beyond isolated incidents and are increasingly affecting Tulum’s reputation as a tourist destination. Restaurant operators, hoteliers, tour guides, artisans, and small business owners report that negative perceptions fueled by transportation complaints are impacting visitor confidence and spending.

Throughout 2025, Tulum faced mounting criticism on travel review sites and social media, where tourists repeatedly described the destination as beautiful but marred by problematic taxi services. Complaints appear on platforms such as TripAdvisor, Google Reviews, Reddit, TikTok, and Instagram, often citing fare disputes and the absence of clearly posted rates.

Despite ongoing promotion efforts at international tourism fairs and major marketing campaigns, these incidents have continued to undermine the destination’s image. Industry observers note that viral accounts of alleged overcharging can quickly outweigh official tourism messaging.

To date, there has been limited visible enforcement by state mobility authorities. Passengers report a lack of posted fare tables, inspectors, or clear mechanisms to address complaints, contributing to a perception of unchecked practices within the sector.

As festival season continues to draw international visitors, calls are growing for stronger oversight, transparent fare structures, and effective enforcement to protect both tourists and the broader local economy.
