Mexico City — A new mandatory requirement for Mexican citizens traveling to Europe will come into force starting in October. Individuals entering the Schengen Area must comply with the Entry-Exit System (EES), a mandatory digital registry that replaces passport stamps and enables biometric control of travelers.

Implementation of the Entry/Exit System

Starting October 12, 2025, Mexican citizens wishing to enter the Schengen Area must comply with the Entry/Exit System (EES). This is a mandatory digital border control procedure implemented by the European Union. The measure affects all travelers who do not require a visa for short stays, including those traveling for tourism and business trips of up to 90 days.

The EES will automatically record the entry and exit of travelers. It will replace the physical stamp in the passport with a biometric record that includes a facial photograph and fingerprints. The system is also designed to accurately track the length of a traveler's stay, with the stated aims of preventing overstays and detecting possible document fraud.

Purpose and Existing Requirements

The Spanish Embassy in Mexico explained that this digital system seeks to modernize external borders, streamline immigration controls, and improve security in the region. Despite the implementation of this new measure, the current entry requirements for Mexican passport holders remain in place. A traveler's Mexican passport must be valid for at least three months after the date they plan to leave the Schengen Area.

Scope of the Schengen Area

The Schengen Area comprises 26 European countries that allow visa-free travel for tourists. This group includes nations such as Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, and Greece. The area also includes associated countries such as Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, all of which will apply the EES to all travelers from Mexico and other visa-exempt countries.

Immigration authorities emphasize that the new digital system will allow for more efficient control of stays, prevent the misuse of documents, and guarantee the safety of travelers.
