Cancún, Quintana Roo — A 19-year-old woman suffered severe injuries after her arm became trapped in an industrial grinder while assisting her family with food preparation in the Avante neighborhood. Emergency responders, including firefighters and medical personnel from the General Hospital “Dr. Jesús Kumate Rodríguez,” worked urgently to free her amid significant blood loss.
A Harrowing Workplace Accident
The incident occurred shortly before noon when the young woman was helping her family prepare food for sale at local markets. In a moment of negligence, her arm was pulled into the grinder, leaving her trapped as the machine’s mechanism held her limb in place.
Witnesses reported that she was transported to the hospital with the grinder still attached to her arm. Medical staff rushed her into the emergency room for evaluation, but her parents grew frustrated with the perceived delay in treatment. They signed a voluntary discharge and arranged for a private ambulance, only to discover they lacked the required 130,000-peso deposit for care at a private facility. Forced to return to the public hospital, the victim remained in critical condition due to excessive blood loss.
Rescue Efforts and Uncertain Outcome
Firefighters arrived with specialized equipment to dismantle the grinder, as the woman had been moved between facilities with her arm still lodged inside the machine. A family friend confirmed she was alive but not out of danger, with medical teams striving to save both her life and the injured limb.
The case echoes previous industrial accidents in the region, including a 2021 incident in Campeche where a Yucatecan man bled to death in a similar machine. Authorities have yet to comment on potential safety violations at the worksite.
The investigation into the latest accident remains ongoing.
