Mérida, Yucatán — The National Skateboarding Championship has officially begun at La Plancha Park in Mérida, drawing hundreds of competitors and spectators to one of Mexico’s premier skateboarding venues. The event, organized by the Mexican Skateboarding Federation (FMS), features athletes from across the country competing in street and park disciplines over three days of intense competition.
Elite Athletes and Rising Stars Take the Stage
The championship has attracted top-tier talent, including defending national champion Luis "Lucho" Ramírez from Mexico City and 16-year-old prodigy Valeria Torres from Guadalajara, who is making her debut in the senior division. International judges from the World Skate organization are overseeing the contests, ensuring adherence to global competitive standards.
"This event is a crucial step for Mexican skateboarding," said FMS President Rodrigo Mendoza. "It not only showcases our best athletes but also helps identify talent for future international competitions, including the 2028 Olympics."
La Plancha Park: A Hub for Skateboarding Culture
La Plancha Park, renovated in 2022 with state-of-the-art ramps and street-style obstacles, has become a focal point for skateboarding in Mexico. The venue’s inclusion of shaded seating, live streaming screens, and vendor booths has elevated the spectator experience, with an estimated 5,000 attendees expected over the weekend.
Local skater Diego Herrera, a crowd favorite, emphasized the park’s significance: "La Plancha is more than a competition site—it’s where our community grows. Hosting nationals here puts Yucatán on the map for skateboarding."
Economic and Cultural Impact
The event has generated significant economic activity for Mérida, with hotels reporting near-full occupancy and restaurants seeing increased patronage. The city’s tourism board has partnered with the FMS to offer guided skate tours and cultural events, capitalizing on the championship’s appeal.
Competition continues through Sunday, with finals in both disciplines set to crown new national champions. Live broadcasts are available on the FMS’s official platforms, while tickets remain available at the venue box office.
