Chetumal — The evidence of a security failure is the trail of high-profile bodies that the municipal administration of Othón P. Blanco appears intent on ignoring and forgetting. The pattern of murders is terrifying, but the silence from those in power is infuriating. Inaction as an operational premise has been the constant of this municipal administration, which will leave an indelible mark due to the scandalous number of violent acts committed during its years in government, keeping society as a whole prostrate.
A Reckoning of the Most Relevant Cases
The Case of Jhonatan B.
The businessman Jhonatan B. was executed, his body bagged and abandoned on the Boulevard Bahía, the tourist heart of Chetumal. It was a message of narco power that the mayor ignored.
On April 27, 2024, it was reported that a bagged man was executed on Chetumal's Boulevard Bahía, near the Universidad Autónoma de Quintana Roo. The victim was taken out of a vehicle and killed on the spot, in plain view on a public thoroughfare. The perpetrators withdrew with impunity, without the authorities doing anything about it.
The report came in just before 4:00 in the morning. Officers from several corporations were sent to the site. Upon arrival, the uniformed officers observed a bagged person in the middle of the street, with six spent shell casings and a bullet projectile scattered around.
On the bagged corpse, a piece of cardboard with threats was found, stabbed into the victim's body with a knife. The message stated: "This is what will happen to all the assholes….. who keep listening to 'CHECHE' and all his gang of thieves and extortionists. You're going to get it, and stop being such 'fags' killing 'innocent' people. Keep running like in 'Butrón'….. you damn child killers. If you already know where…. we are, then bring it….. Sincerely….. you know who!!!!!"
The Case of Evaristo G. D.
Subsequently, Evaristo G. D., a sugarcane leader, was killed. His murder was announced and carried out at a cinematic level. The ex-leader, who had survived a previous attempt on his life, was riddled with bullets in the town of Sacxan alongside his driver and his bodyguard. A triple execution that silenced a powerful voice in the sugarcane sector.
On May 12, 2025, the lifeless body of Evaristo, who had recently concluded his term as president of the Unión Local de Productores de Caña, was located in the afternoon in a sugarcane field near the community of Sacxan, on the banks of the Río Hondo. State authorities mobilized immediately after receiving the report to the emergency number, confirming at the site the death of the well-known sugarcane leader.
The discovery caused consternation among inhabitants of southern Quintana Roo, as he was a figure who had been the target of attacks in the past. According to official data, his body was found alongside those of two other men, who were allegedly part of his security team. The circumstances of the crime were investigated by agents of the State Attorney General's Office, who at that time cordoned off the area to carry out the corresponding procedures.
The leader had survived an armed attack in October 2024, when he was wounded in the right arm after leaving a church in the town of Carlos A. Madrazo. On that occasion, as he was getting into his truck after a mass, an individual approached and shot him at point-blank range before fleeing. The leader managed to survive and received medical attention after the attack.
The Case of "Felipillo"
Finally, "Felipillo," a sugarcane leader from the community. Horror in its maximum expression. José Antonio D. G. was kidnapped, tortured, and his body abandoned in the town of Obregón Viejo.
Crucially, "Felipillo" had published videos denouncing direct threats, pleading for help that the government of Yensunni Martínez never provided him; rather, no authority did.
The events were reported in Álvaro Obregón Viejo on August 7, 2025. The day began with a discovery that once again raised alarms about the growing insecurity in the rural area of southern Quintana Roo. At 7:00 in the morning, citizens reported the lifeless body of a man at the bus stop in the town of Álvaro Obregón Viejo, a community located in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco.
The victim was found with his hands tied behind his back, his eyes blindfolded, and with visible blood stains. He was wearing denim pants and ankle-high boots, the scene itself depicting a bloody execution.
The Rural Police were the first to arrive at the location and confirmed the veracity of the citizen's report. Immediately, the corresponding protocols were activated, and the Investigative Police were notified. The discovery occurred a couple of days after he had been abducted.
Southern Quintana Roo, particularly in communities near the border strip, has registered a sharp increase in violent events related to territorial disputes and trafficking routes in recent years.
