Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Municipal personnel, with assistance from the Municipal Police, dismantled a homeless camp constructed under the Playa del Carmen boulevard bridge this morning, an operation in which two individuals were also detained.
Julieta Martín Azueta, Secretary of Public Services, commented that at the beginning of the week they detected that people were sleeping under this federal highway bridge, so they went during the day and removed several mattresses, in addition to providing cleaning in the area.
“Last night we noticed there was a bonfire, so we made rounds to see if we could find anyone. This morning, at seven, we arrived at the bridge and saw that the homeless had placed pallets between the beams to make their houses,” she narrated.
Two individuals were caught by the police, while Public Services personnel had to remove a considerable amount of garbage.
The official indicated they will maintain surveillance in the area, as it is important to preserve the cleanliness and security under the bridge, and not allow it to be used as a restroom or for installing mattresses or shacks.
Julieta Martín commented that it has become a recurring issue to find “houses” made by homeless individuals in different public areas of the city, using shopping carts and buckets, among other objects.
“It falls to us to remove all that and clean,” she declared.
