Mexican Government’s $300 Million Plan to Fix Sinkhole on Federal Highway 307

A traffic jam caused by road construction with multiple trucks and cars lined up on a highway, diverted through a narrow passage marked by orange cones.

The Mexican government has announced a 300 million peso investment to build a bridge and address a decade-old sinkhole on Federal Highway 307. This highway spans from Agrarian Reform to Puerto Juarez, with the affected section running from Playa del Carmen to Puerto Morelos.

The sinkhole, located between kilometers 303.5 and 311.9 of the highway, has been a persistent issue. Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, head of the Ministry of Infrastructure Communications and Transportation, reported that immediate efforts are being made to enhance signage and ensure safer traffic conditions for drivers.

Medina explained that while they are currently exploring potential solutions to repair the sinkhole, these efforts are primarily focused on improving safety rather than providing a definitive solution. The start date for the bridge construction, which will span 0.333 kilometers and create 2,191 jobs, has not yet been specified.
