Mexico City — Mexico’s Environment Ministry (Semarnat) and the National Lottery have unveiled a special lottery ticket to mark World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5 as established by the United Nations.
The ticket for Superior Draw No. 2885 features the slogan “Mexico plays fair – reduce • reuse • recycle,” aiming to encourage reflection on environmental conservation and promote care for the planet. The campaign, titled “Score a goal for the environment,” is part of the government’s broader Social World Cup strategy tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The unveiling took place at the lottery’s traditional draw theater, led by Environment Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, National Lottery Director General Olivia Salomón, and Gabriela Cuevas Barron, the Mexican government’s coordinator for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“We face a triple planetary crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are interconnected phenomena that require coordinated and urgent action,” Bárcena said. “We want this World Cup to also be a clean World Cup, free of plastics, with a citizenry committed to environmental care.”
She highlighted Mexico’s waste challenge, noting the country generates about 140,000 tons of garbage daily. “We must move toward a model based on reducing, reusing, and recycling. Mexico plays fair in environmental matters too, and every collective action counts to build a cleaner, fairer, and more sustainable country,” she added.
Salomón said the lottery is proud to dedicate this ticket to the commemoration with a clear and powerful message. “A lottery share can also become memory, identity, and a vehicle to carry important messages,” she said.
She noted that in the context of the upcoming World Cup, the government is promoting the “Green World Cup: With Fair Play, the Planet Wins” strategy, aligned with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s vision that development, sports, and environmental care can go hand in hand.
Gabriela Cuevas called on citizens to adopt better daily practices ahead of the tournament, such as waste separation, recycling, and eliminating single-use plastics. “Mexico has traditionally been a very rich country in its diversity, its ecosystems, and all that nature has offered us,” she said. “Every day it is up to us not only to care for it but also to give back.”
The Superior Draw No. 2885 offers a top prize of 17 million pesos (about $850,000) in two series, with a total prize pool of 51 million pesos. The lottery has issued 2.4 million tickets, available at sales points and online at miloteria.mx. The draw will take place on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the National Lottery’s official YouTube channel.
