The Government of Mexico officially presented Coatlicue, the new national supercomputer that will become the most powerful in Latin America, according to the Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications (ATDT). The investment allocated for its construction will be 6 billion pesos, as reported by José Peña Merino during La Mañanera.
Coatlicue will be integrated by approximately 14,000 GPUs, equivalent to hundreds of thousands of devices working simultaneously. Its capacity will allow it to reach 314 petaflops, meaning it can perform 314 thousand trillion operations per second, surpassing by seven times the most powerful supercomputer currently located in Brazil.
The final location of this infrastructure will be defined in January 2026 by a specialized committee, since this type of system requires enormous availability of water and energy to function safely and stably.
Unprecedented Computing Capacity for Mexico
According to the ATDT, Coatlicue will be composed of 15,000 GPUs distributed across 200 interconnected cabinets, equivalent to more than 400,000 computers operating at the same time. This level of power will allow solving calculations that currently take weeks or even years in a matter of seconds.
The supercomputer will be a public, sovereign infrastructure operated by Mexican talent, positioning Mexico as a regional reference in technology, science, and digital transformation. It will form part of the so-called Plan Mexico, a strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s innovation and digital economy.
Coatlicue will boost national capacity in artificial intelligence, advanced simulation, predictive analysis, and large databases, key areas to compete globally in the next decade.
Benefits Promised by Coatlicue
- Public decision-making based on massive data analysis
- Accurate prediction of climate phenomena and natural disasters
- Agricultural planning and strengthening of food sovereignty
- Estimations of surface and underground water throughout the country
- Specialized evaluations for energy, mobility, and telecommunications
- Data processing to combat corruption and tax evasion
- Boost to scientific research and artificial intelligence
- Support for startups and services to private companies for their financing
- Training of engineers and researchers in advanced computing
