Cancun, Quintana Roo — Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) will open bidding this month for construction of a major new overpass in Cancun’s Hotel Zone designed to improve traffic flow and connect with the upcoming Nichupté Bridge.
The Kukulcán Distributor will be a 770-meter-long elevated roadway built at kilometer 13+500 of Kukulcán Boulevard, directly connecting to the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge. The project covers 12,165 square meters and will feature 10 support columns with concrete beams supporting five main traffic lanes.
Guido Mendiburu Solís, director of the SICT Center in Quintana Roo, said the project is moving forward after submitting the Environmental Impact Statement to the Environment Ministry last month.
“We expect to begin this month to build the second level that will be a complementary work to the Nichupté Bridge and that will greatly streamline mobility,” Mendiburu Solís said.
The distributor is designed to handle Cancun’s high tourist traffic, starting with four lanes and widening to 28.4 meters at its broadest section. The design includes a 2.5-meter bike lane and dedicated merging lanes to prevent bottlenecks.
All construction will occur within existing right-of-way along Kukulcán Boulevard to minimize impact on adjacent properties while modernizing what officials call the state’s most dynamic road interconnection.
