Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico’s Tourism Ministry (Sectur) called for responsible tourism and greater appreciation of wetlands on World Wetlands Day, highlighting the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve as a prime destination.

The agency emphasized that wetlands are essential ecosystems for biodiversity, environmental balance, and human well-being.

Sian Ka’an: A Natural Treasure

Among the featured destinations is the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, one of Mexico’s most important wetlands and a natural symbol of Quintana Roo. The reserve is located on the eastern coast of Quintana Roo, south of Tulum, and encompasses jungles, manglares, lagoons, reefs, and marine areas.

This natural sanctuary, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to hundreds of species and communities that coexist harmoniously with their environment.

Wetlands have been crucial since prehistoric times, serving as sources of resources, settlement areas, and cultural development for various civilizations. Today, their preservation is fundamental in the face of climate change effects and pressure from urban and tourist growth.

Other Iconic Mexican Wetlands

Beyond Sian Ka’an, Mexico boasts other iconic wetlands such as Xochimilco in Mexico City, where pre-Hispanic chinampas (floating gardens) survive, and the Laguna de Zapotlán in Jalisco.

Visiting these sites promotes their conservation and acknowledges the cultural legacy tied to them, officials noted.
