Mexico Plans Secure Airport Access for Ride-Hailing Apps, Announces Clear Taxi Fares in Cancun

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum speaking at a press conference about transportation safety measures

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans to create secure access points for ride-hailing services at airports nationwide, including Cancun International Airport, as the country prepares for increased tourism during the 2026 World Cup.

During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum explained the key difference between traditional taxis and digital platforms: taxis pay fees that grant them direct access to operate within airport terminals, while app-based services do not.

“Taxis pay a fee at airports, a right. That allows them to have direct access… app-based taxis don’t pay that right,” Sheinbaum said.

She emphasized the importance of ensuring users can safely access these platforms, stating authorities will designate specific areas for ride-hailing pickups.

“It’s important that users who use apps can have safe access, that there are secure access points to take your app vehicle or taxi,” she affirmed.

The president also acknowledged that traditional taxi fares can sometimes be excessive and said authorities are working to make them more affordable.

“That taxis have accessible fares, because sometimes they go overboard,” she added.

Transparent Fares and Order at Cancun Airport

Quintana Roo’s governor detailed concrete actions already underway at Cancun International Airport to maintain order in transportation services.

She explained that authorities are working with federal officials and the airport concessionaire to prevent irregular taxi operations and regularize their status.

The governor confirmed that digital platforms are permitted in the state but must meet security requirements to operate.

Regarding fares, she announced officials will establish an official rate schedule to be released in coming days.

“We’ve developed a fare schedule that will be announced so tourists know exactly how much their transfer costs,” she explained.

This scheme will allow visitors to know costs in advance to destinations like the hotel zone, Puerto Morelos, or Playa del Carmen.

The state leader also highlighted efforts to improve visitor experience from arrival, including faster immigration processing and clearer transportation options.

She said the goal is for each tourist to freely choose their transportation method, whether taxi, collective transport, or digital platforms.

“The objective is that the tourist can decide how they want to get to their destination,” she affirmed.
