Mexico City — Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard called for strengthening the bilateral relationship with Canada to address global geopolitical tensions and shifting trade rules.
Speaking to a delegation of approximately 400 Canadian business leaders, Ebrard emphasized that the current international context demands greater coordination between strategic partners, particularly regarding supply chain security.
Closer Cooperation Amid New Global Rules
In remarks delivered in French and English, Ebrard stressed that profound changes in the international environment require Mexico and Canada to jointly design a strategy for the coming years.
He noted that new economic and political dynamics compel allied nations to act with increased coordination and mutual trust, especially amid commercial uncertainty.
The economy secretary highlighted that Canada is one of Mexico’s top investors and most significant trading partners, with potential to expand bilateral exchange in the short term.
A Relationship That Multiplied 12 Times
Addressing Canadian Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Northern Affairs and Domestic Trade Dominique LeBlanc, Ebrard recalled that economic ties between the two nations have multiplied 12-fold over the past 30 years.
He emphasized that this growth positions Mexico and Canada as one of the world’s most successful commercial and investment partnerships, with potential for further expansion in coming years.
Strategic Sectors for Future Cooperation
Ebrard identified key areas for strengthening productive cooperation, including pharmaceuticals, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, critical minerals, robotics, drones, artificial intelligence, vaccine development, and new medical technologies.
He stated that the current moment represents an opportunity to consolidate a strategic alliance that reduces external risks and strengthens regional competitiveness in North America.
With this appeal, Mexico seeks to reinforce its relationship with Canada as a reliable partner in an increasingly complex and competitive international landscape.
