Mexico Delays U.S. Troop Entry, Sheinbaum Denies Venezuela Link

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addresses the postponement of U.S. troop entry

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirmed that the Senate postponed the entry of U.S. soldiers into Mexico, but asserted that the decision has nothing to do with events in Venezuela.

In this way, the federal leader dismisses that it is retaliation for the military intervention in Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro.

“There has to be an extraordinary meeting because it is approved by the full Senate, and as far as I understand, not particularly for this reason, but there were other initiatives that had to be approved first, so they decided to do it until February, which is when the normal session period begins,” stated Claudia Sheinbaum.

The federal leader emphasized that the decision is not related to what happened in Venezuela, and that furthermore, these actions are planned well in advance by the Senate of the Republic.

“It has nothing to do with what happened in Venezuela, no, because these are actions that have been carried out for a long time and evidently constitutionally, well, there has to be the approval of the Senate. So, what they decided was to postpone it until there is an ordinary session, given that there was no other topic for an extraordinary session,” said Claudia Sheinbaum.

Entry of Military Personnel Postponed

Following the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, the Mexican Senate postponed the approval of the entry of U.S. soldiers into Mexican territory to train sailors of this country.

The Navy Commission, headed by Morenista Carlos Lomelí, suspended the extraordinary meeting scheduled for noon this Monday, in which it was planned to discuss two rulings that would authorize the entry into Mexico of U.S. Navy special forces and the departure of Mexican troops to the United States.

The technical secretary of the Commission, Israel Alvarado Martínez, formalized the suspension this Monday, in a document addressed to the president of the Senate’s Board of Directors, Laura Itzel Castillo. There is no new date for its realization.

According to the agenda, the senators would discuss the ruling regarding the request for authorization for President Claudia Sheinbaum to allow the entry into Mexico of troops from special forces of the United States Navy.

Likewise, the discussion of another ruling that would allow the departure of elements of the Mexican Navy to the United States was scheduled.
