The Mexican peso begins 2026 with a slight loss against the dollar, trading in the first minutes of Thursday, January 1, 2026, in the range of 18 units per dollar.

This Thursday morning, the exchange rate is trading at 18.01 pesos per dollar. Additionally, the Mexican peso has registered a loss of 0.47% compared to the last 7 days, according to data from the Investing platform.

Although the Mexican peso has not been able to break through the floor of 18 again to reach 17 units, as happened a few days ago, 2025 was a favorable year for the national currency compared to the beginning of 2024, when the dollar exchange rate closed at 20.88 pesos.

3 Factors That Appreciated the Peso in 2025

Gabriela Siller Pagaza, director of Economic Analysis at Grupo Financiero BASE, explained that the peso appreciated in 2025 due to three main factors:

  1. The weakness of the dollar due to expectations of interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve (FED).
  2. Carry-trade positions that favored the peso, due to the wide interest rate differential between Mexico and advanced economies like the United States and Japan, and the lower perception of risk regarding Mexico.
  3. The strengthening of silver in the commodities market. Silver has accumulated a gain of 148.62% for the year, its largest annual advance since 1979, reaching a historical price of 84.01 dollars per ounce.

The Exchange Rate Could Fall in 2026

Furthermore, the specialist indicates that in 2026 the exchange rate could drop to 17.65 pesos per dollar in the first months of the year, if the dollar’s weakness continues and the carry-trade operations that have favored the peso are maintained.
