Mexican Documentary ‘Café: Cantos de Humo’ Screens in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The documentary “Café: Cantos de humo,” a Mexican film that delves into themes of grief, identity, and community, will screen Thursday, July 30 at the Teatro 8 de Octubre.

Directed by Hatuey Viveros Lavielle, the documentary is filmed primarily in Nahuatl and follows a family in the Sierra Norte of Puebla as they attempt to rebuild their lives after the father’s death. The mother, Teresa, works to support the household while her children face decisions that could alter their futures.

Jorge, the eldest son, is about to finish his law degree and aims to become the first lawyer from his community, but must choose between seeking professional opportunities elsewhere or staying close to his family and village. His adolescent sister Rosario grapples with motherhood and the possibility of continuing her education.

The film captures daily life—coffee harvesting, roasting, household chores, and family rituals—offering an intimate portrait of loss, heritage, economic hardship, and attachment to place. The camera observes without intrusion, letting the community’s life, silences, and language guide the story.

Released in 2014, “Café: Cantos de humo” won the Sesterce d’Or at the Visions du Réel International Film Festival in Switzerland and was featured in the documentary series at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

The screening is part of the “Cartografías del afecto” film cycle, which uses cinema as a space where memory, identity, and community bonds converge. A discussion will follow the screening, allowing the audience to share reflections and impressions.
