To celebrate World Tourism Day 2024, the 39th International Coastal and Water Bodies Clean-Up is scheduled for Saturday, September 21. The event is planned by the Association of Hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres, with the support of Ocean Conservancy and ARSA Caribe. The clean-up activities in the Mexican Caribbean are set to take place from 8 to 10 a.m. at various beaches in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Holbox. A separate clean-up will occur at the Tortuguero Punta Sur Camp in Cozumel on September 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. To join the Cancun clean-up, interested parties should email [email protected]
The call for support extends to all companies and individuals interested in organizing their own clean-up activities as part of the "Sustainable Hospitality Communication Plan". Independent events can be arranged between September and November, and must be registered on the official Clean Swell app. Ocean Conservancy will compile a report from these events for analysis and inclusion in an annual global report. Donations of materials such as leather gloves, garbage bags, water bottles, cone markers, and awnings are also welcomed.
Event organizers advise participants to have breakfast before the event, dress comfortably, wear closed shoes, and bring a hat or cap and a water container. Valuable items should be left at home. Participants are also encouraged to share rides to the event locations and to respect the local plant and animal life.
