Merida City Council recently celebrated the 114th anniversary of the Centenario Zoo. The event was attended by the Mayor of Merida, Cecilia Patrón Laviada, zoo staff, and members of the public, including children and their families.

Mayor Laviada commended the zoo staff for their dedication and outlined plans for future improvements to the site. Recent enhancements to the zoo include the installation of a roof near the small train and a revamp of the site's signage. The popular children's water fountain has also been refurbished.

Looking to the future, the Mayor said, "In 2025 and 2026, we plan to give the Merida Centenario a new look. This is a place that I'm sure everyone has a fond memory or story about."

She acknowledged that there are many areas for improvement and growth, such as the small train, which could benefit from operational and structural innovations. "There are many features that need to be updated and refreshed. We will announce these changes as and when our budget allows. The improvements will be implemented in stages," she added.

The event concluded with zoo staff being recognized for their conservation efforts, both in maintaining the premises and caring for the animals. A cake was cut to commemorate the zoo, a cherished landmark for the people of Yucatan.
