This weekend, Mérida will be buzzing with patriotic celebrations and a variety of cultural and artistic events. The Mérida City Council, led by municipal president Cecilia Patrón Laviada, is committed to promoting local culture and traditions. These activities aim to make Mérida a hub for talent, creativity, and learning.

The José Martí Cultural Centre will host Sonoran writer Carlos René Padilla on Friday, September 13 at 7:30 pm. Padilla will discuss his book “Hércules en el desierto”. A recipient of the 2022 National Literature Award José Fuentes Mares for his work “Bavispe”, Padilla's writing spans from chronicles to crime reporting, and immersive journalism.

The same venue will host children's craft workshops on Saturday, September 14. Children can create “Patriotic eggs” and participate in a “Confetti cannon” science experiment at 9:00 am and 10:00 am respectively. Berta Merodio "La gallipava" will be present to add to the fun. All workshops are free, but space is limited.

The animated short film “Los días cada vez son más cortos” will be shown on Sundays, September 15 and 22, at the South Cultural Centre at 11 am. Directed by David Igneas, the film narrates the story of a lonely orange cat whose caregiver doesn't return home.

Meridana Week will continue this weekend with its regular schedule. On Fridays, the “Isla de Luz” videomapping is projected at the Monument to the Homeland at 8 pm. On Saturday, the Mayan ball game “Pok Ta Pok” will be played in San Sebastian Park. The “Noche Mexicana” program will celebrate national festivities with folklore and music at the Remate del Paseo de Montejo, both events starting at 8 pm.

On Sunday, “Mérida en Domingo” will take place in Santa Ana park from 10 am, featuring handicrafts, gastronomy, and live performances until 9 pm.

On Monday, September 16, the city council’s Ballet Folclórico Representativo will perform a “Yucatecan Vaquería”, accompanied by the Jaranera Orchestra, at 9 pm at the Parque de la Ermita.

In the visual arts, the Olimpo Cultural Centre is hosting temporary exhibitions “A dos manos” by Efrén Maldonado and David Mex, and the collective “Ensayo visual sobre el encuentro”, curated by Maestro Alberto Arceo. These exhibits are open throughout September, from Tuesday to Sunday, with free admission.

The Olimpo Season will premiere films, music, and circus arts throughout September.
