Tulum, Quintana Roo — Residents of Tulum are demanding action after members of a group locally referred to as the “death squad” have taken over the city’s central park, transforming the public space into a site of disorder and unsanitary conditions. Witnesses report that the individuals sleep, urinate, and engage in violent altercations in the area, forcing families to avoid the once-popular recreational spot.

Park Overrun by Disorder

According to local accounts, the park, previously a hub for children’s activities, now reeks of urine due to the group’s presence. “We used to bring our children here every day to play, but now it smells foul because these unhoused individuals have claimed the park as their own. They sleep here and relieve themselves openly,” said Manuel Palomeque, a resident of the Centro neighborhood.

Cecilia Alfaro, another concerned citizen, expressed frustration over the situation, emphasizing the negative image it projects for the city. “It’s unacceptable that this public space, meant for community enjoyment, has been hijacked by these individuals. Fights break out regularly, yet authorities do nothing,” she stated.

Calls for Government Intervention

Alfaro urged municipal, state, and federal authorities to intervene, stressing that the park’s deterioration has made families hesitant to visit. “This space was designated for wholesome recreation, but now families think twice before bringing their children here. Immediate action is needed,” she concluded.
