Quintana Roo, Mexico — Specialized clinics and hospitals in Quintana Roo report growing numbers of medical tourists who combine healthcare procedures with vacations in the Mexican Caribbean. The state has solidified its position as one of Mexico’s leading destinations for medical tourism, attracting international patients who save between 40% and 70% on treatments compared to costs in their home countries.
Strategic Location and Growing Demand
The success of Quintana Roo’s medical tourism sector is attributed to its strategic location and air connectivity, particularly with cities in the United States and Canada. Jesús Garza, an executive at Sani Medical Tourism, noted that his group expanded operations to Playa del Carmen in 2020 and later to Cancún in 2023 due to rising demand.
"Unlike other medical destinations in Mexico, such as Los Algodones in Baja California, which primarily serve older adults, Quintana Roo’s market consists largely of younger patients between 30 and 50 years old seeking cosmetic, dental, or outpatient procedures while enjoying the region’s beaches and tourist attractions," Garza explained.
Rapid Growth and New Investments
Hospital Joya Cancún exemplifies this growth, reporting a 300% increase in patient intake within just two years of operation. Leopoldo Suárez, a representative of the hospital, announced plans for a new facility in Tulum during the 2025 Tianguis Turístico tourism fair.
The hospital employs between 420 and 450 local staff, with Suárez noting that wages exceed those in the public sector. "Our doctors and personnel are primarily from the region, though some specialists have relocated from other states to join our team," he said.
To accommodate medical tourists, hospitals have formed partnerships with 45 hotels in Cancún, offering bundled packages that combine treatments with vacation stays.
Evolving Patient Profiles and Challenges
The profile of medical tourists has shifted, with increased demand for cosmetic procedures such as dental veneers and rejuvenation treatments. Garza highlighted that patients often extend their stays to recover while enjoying the destination.
However, the sector faces challenges, including the need for greater promotion in emerging markets and standardized pricing to prevent unfair competition. Despite these hurdles, the outlook remains positive, particularly in Cancún and Playa del Carmen, where demand is bolstered by expatriates and digital nomads seeking affordable healthcare.
Regulatory Compliance and Industry Recognition
Garza emphasized the sector’s collaboration with state and federal authorities, including the Secretariat of Tourism, Secretariat of Health, and the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris). "We have undergone rigorous verification processes and received excellence certifications, confirming our high medical standards and patient care," he said.
Regarding participation in events like the Tianguis Turístico, Garza added, "We aim to expand our reach with both public and private sectors to identify new market opportunities. While we already have a strong presence in the U.S., we need to better understand patient perceptions and trends."
The continued expansion of medical tourism in Quintana Roo underscores its role as a key driver of economic growth and healthcare innovation in Mexico.
