Measles Cases in Quintana Roo Prompt Surge in Vaccinations

People line up at a vaccination clinic in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, following confirmed measles cases in the state.

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Health officials in Quintana Roo reported a significant increase in vaccination rates over the weekend after confirming six measles cases across the state, with more than 1,100 doses administered in the capital city of Chetumal alone.

The State Health Department (SESA) intensified its vaccination campaign following the confirmed infections, which included two 10-month-old twins in Chetumal, a five-year-old child and a 24-year-old woman in Playa del Carmen, and a 26-year-old woman and 48-year-old man in Cancún.

Health workers from Jurisdicción Sanitaria Número Uno reported that vaccination modules across the state, particularly in Chetumal, saw high demand as residents sought protection against the disease. The “Caravana del Bienestar” vaccination drive set up a module at Aarón Merino Fernández Park, where the measles vaccine was among the most requested.

“It’s better to take precautions now than to regret getting sick later,” said Joaquina López, one of the residents who received the vaccine. Like many others, she decided to get vaccinated after hearing about the confirmed cases in the state.

Health workers noted that each vaccination site offers up to 100 daily doses, which are quickly exhausted due to high demand. The campaign targets people aged 10 to 49, particularly those who did not receive the vaccine in childhood, cannot recall their vaccination history, lack documentation, or have incomplete immunization schedules. Children under 10 at key ages are also included.

The vaccination campaign continues throughout February at Plaza Las Américas in Chetumal, operating Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
