President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has provided an update on the Mayan Train project, indicating that sections 5, 6, and 7 could be completed by September 15th. The President confirmed that the train is already operational from Palenque in Chiapas to Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo. However, work is still ongoing on the remaining sections, which include an elevated stretch of approximately 80 kilometers.
The current focus is on the section from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, part of section 5. This section has proven to be more challenging due to the construction of an 80-kilometer viaduct. The elevated structure, akin to a second floor, is designed to navigate the area's complex terrain and protect its underground rivers and cenotes. The total length of this section is 120 kilometers, with the train running on the elevated track for 80 kilometers.
López Obrador highlighted the novelty of the environmental protection measures being implemented in this project. He contrasted this approach with previous constructions in the Riviera Maya, which were carried out without due consideration for the impact on natural areas. He cited examples of hotels and tourist centers, such as Xcaret, that were built without regard for the environment, even altering the courses of underground rivers.
The President also shared the projected timeline for the full inauguration of the Mayan Train. The Chetumal section is expected to be ready by the end of August, while the entire project, including stations, should be completed before September 15th. He emphasized that the project encompasses not only the train but also a comprehensive social development program and the conservation and enhancement of archaeological sites. He also mentioned the construction of new hotels as part of the project. He expressed his expectation that all work would be fully completed by the mid-September deadline.
