TULUM — An artistic project named the "Mayan Portal" is currently being installed as part of the Day of the Dead activities in Tulum. The initiative was designed by the creative director Karla, who explained that the goal is to offer an immersive experience that combines ancestral elements of Mayan culture with the essence of Hanal Pixán.
According to the designer, the structure proposes an architectural concept different from that of traditional altars. The base is composed of electro-welded mesh, wood, and local palm, materials that provide solidity and maintain a connection with the environment. Furthermore, LED lighting will be integrated to highlight the design during the night, making the tour even more attractive for visitors.
The interior of the portal will also have an interactive character. Catrinas and mirrors will be placed so that attendees can take photographs and observe the composition from various angles. This visual proposal seeks to generate curiosity and stimulate the participation of the public attending the festivities.
The use of cempasúchil will be a key element in the ambiance. Karla stated that the natural flower cannot be missing because it preserves the essence of these celebrations and allows families to perceive its characteristic aroma. To complement the decoration, artificial cempasúchil and upper vegetation will also be used, which will provide greater volume and vitality to the ensemble.
The project is being developed in collaboration with Conri Estudio and the company Orquídeas, which is dedicated to landscaping. According to those responsible, it is a venture that aims to innovate without losing sight of the cultural roots that give Tulum and the peninsular region their identity.
The "Mayan Portal" will be available during the commemorative activities for the Day of the Dead, and it is expected to become a point of interest for local families and the tourism visiting the municipality during these dates.
Karla invited the public to visit the installation and highlighted that it is a new and different creation that seeks to keep the tradition alive through art and the intervention of public space.
This project adds to the cultural expressions that each year strengthen the celebration of Hanal Pixán in Tulum, a practice that continues to evolve but maintains respect and the preservation of community values as its foundation.
