The Ministry of National Defense plans to offer internet service to Maya Train passengers along its entire 1,554-kilometer route beginning next January. The service will offer several options, including a free plan and plans designated bronze, silver, gold, and full-day. Currently, all trains in operation have internet infrastructure installed, although the signal is intermittent between some stations.

“A mobile service at speeds exceeding 160 km/h should be considered, allowing for high service availability on board the trains at any geographical coordinate in southeastern Mexico,” the agency states in the ongoing market research. Interested companies have until next Friday to submit their proposals.

After analyzing the information received, the contracting procedure will be decided through a public tender, an invitation to at least three parties, or direct award. The services are scheduled to be provided from January 1, 2027, to June 30, 2028.

The information disseminated specified that the market research will be valid for 120 calendar days from its date of issue. Therefore, when making technical and economic proposals, bidders must guarantee the permanence of the commercial, technical, and economic conditions offered.

To ensure the Maya Train project has control over internet service, a system was proposed that differentiates between user profiles. This will guarantee usage by applying specific policies for each profile, such as bandwidth limits, session time, and permitted content categories. It will also include the availability of virtual credits and pricing for each profile. With the new service, the tourism company managed by the Army seeks to offer greater benefits to national and international users of the railway service.

Internet and Advertising

As is the case in some airports in the country, the internet connection will have an advertising space that will allow the agency to generate additional income.

“The proposals must include an advertising module that allows for the management, scheduling, and deployment of promotional content within the captive portal and the interfaces for accessing the internet service on board the Maya Train. This will enable the presentation of dynamic ads based on user profile, time, route, or consumption, integrating natively with the authentication and pricing system,” the agency explained.

In addition, performance metrics, campaign management, and the ability to monetize advertising space must be offered, ensuring a non-intrusive experience aligned with the service’s connectivity policies.

The advertising that will be disseminated will be chosen directly by the Maya Train company, which will deliver it to the company contracted to offer the service.
