Mexico City, January 2 — The Maya Train inaugurated on Thursday the first journey of its long-distance train named “P’atal” (a Mayan word meaning “to stay” or “to remain”), which travels from Cancún, Quintana Roo, to Mérida, Yucatán.
The inaugural event of the Maya Train, known as “The New Year’s Express,” featured full occupancy and took place between December 29 and January 1. Attendees of the trip even shared a toast.
Through a post on X, the Maya Train announced that this new service is part of a unique and commemorative experience conducted as part of the “New Year’s Express” Tourist Package, which is designed exclusively to enjoy the Cancún to Mérida route with greater comfort, rhythm, and connection.
In this regard, it was highlighted that throughout this journey, passengers can appreciate the landscapes of the southeast under a service of greater attention and comfort, with an experience designed to enjoy an “unrepeatable trip,” intended to celebrate the start of the year aboard the Maya Train.
The Maya Train reported that the implementation of this service was a complete success, as full occupancy of the New Year’s Express was achieved. Thus, the first passengers of this trip showed enthusiasm for being part of the new experience in the Mexican southeast.
Images circulated on social media of the passengers who gathered on the Maya Train to celebrate the arrival of 2026, who also shared a special toast as the train advanced.
According to the Maya Train website, “The New Year’s Express” lasted four days and three nights. The unique date for the inaugural event was from December 29 to January 1, 2026.
Route Details
The route of this trip includes visits to the most emblematic points of the Caribbean and Mayan culture, such as the following places:
- Start: Reception at Tulum International Airport (arriving from AIFA).
- Quintana Roo: Visits to the Tulum archaeological zone, the Jaguar Park, and the Regional Museum of the Eastern Coast.
- Train Journey: Travel to the city of Cancún and subsequently transfer to the state of Yucatán.
- Yucatán: Stay in Mérida, where the main celebration takes place, and a closing in the port of Progreso to witness the first sunrise of 2026 by the sea, including a visit to the Meteorite Museum.
