Cancun, Mexico — The multimodal cargo terminal for the Maya Train in Cancun is currently 12.96 percent complete in its first stage, according to Ricardo Vallejo, commander of the "Felipe Ángeles" Engineering Group of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena). The update was provided during a morning press conference led by President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday.
During his presentation, which detailed the progress of railway projects across the country, the military official stated that the work being carried out at the four cargo terminals under construction in this first stage includes earthworks, land clearing for future buildings, the construction of the buildings themselves, paving of internal roadways with hydraulic concrete, the laying and assembly of railway tracks, as well as archaeological salvage and environmental mitigation.
Alongside the Cancun terminal, construction is also underway on the terminal in Poxilá, south of Mérida, the terminal in Palenque, and the terminal in Progreso. The adaptation work includes interconnecting the Palenque terminal with the Isthmus of Tehuantepec train, a connection they are "very close to achieving."
This will eventually allow for a train network that extends from border to border; that is, from Chetumal to Nogales. The connection is estimated to be ready by December of this year.
In Yucatán, work is progressing on the construction of 49 kilometers of new railway tracks to connect the new terminal in Poxilá with the port of Progreso. Additionally, 18 kilometers of track are being replaced from Poxilá towards downtown Mérida, to utilize the abandoned tracks of the old train that once traversed the city.
