Chelem, Yucatan — A massive influx of sargassum seaweed has overwhelmed beaches in Chelem, a coastal community near Progreso, for several days, surpassing the cleanup capacity of local authorities.
Brigades from the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) and port personnel are conducting permanent cleanup operations, but officials say the volume of seaweed washing ashore exceeds their collection efforts.
Foul Odor from Accumulated Seaweed
The accumulation of large quantities of sargassum in some areas is generating a foul odor that affects both residents and visitors.
Authorities acknowledged the collaboration of residents and beachfront establishments, such as Casa Sirena, in cleaning adjacent areas. However, they noted the considerable volume of seaweed requires a joint effort from more sectors of the community.
They called on palapa owners, businesses along the coastal strip, fishermen, and the general public to join cleanup efforts and help collect sargassum to mitigate the effects of the natural phenomenon.
Call for Collective Beach Care
Officials emphasized that sargassum arrival is a natural phenomenon that cannot be prevented but can be addressed through collective participation.
They highlighted that beach care is not the exclusive responsibility of authorities but a shared commitment between government and citizens.
Personnel from the local commission and Zofemat continue working on various stretches of the beach. Authorities reiterated the invitation for anyone wishing to join the cleanup to do so as a solidarity action for the natural environment and tourism image.
