Cozumel — The auditorium of the Museum of the Island was filled with applause and emotions on the night of last Friday during the presentation “Mariachi Santa Cecilia: 25 Years of History and Tradition,” a concert that brought the community together to recognize the trajectory of this emblematic group.
At the end of the presentation, the director of the Museum presented a recognition on behalf of the general director of the FPMC, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, highlighting its contribution to the cultural strengthening of Cozumel.
This artistic encounter is part of the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, which promotes the creation of dignified and accessible spaces for all artistic expressions to flourish.
Through this humanistic and transformative vision, it is encouraged that girls, boys, youth, and families can approach art, music, and culture, strengthening identity and the social fabric throughout the state.
Founded in November of the year 2000 by visionary Felipe Ciau Chi, Mariachi Santa Cecilia was born with the purpose of preserving and disseminating traditional Mexican music. Its name honors Saint Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, whose feast is celebrated every November 22.
In these 25 years of trajectory, the mariachi has consolidated as a true seedbed of talents, integrating about 30 musicians from Chiapas, Guanajuato, Mexico City, Jalisco, and Veracruz. Under the direction of its founder, the group became a space for training young people with talent and passion, encouraging them to embrace the tradition of mariachi and keep alive one of the most representative cultural expressions of the country.
The passing of Felipe Ciau in October 2020 meant a painful moment for the group, but his legacy endured thanks to the vision of his son, Miguel Ángel Ciau, who assumed the representation of the group in November of the same year. As a violinist and continuator of the family project, he has guided Mariachi Santa Cecilia toward a new stage, grouping experienced musicians and maintaining the commitment to honor the memory of its founder.
Today, 25 years after its birth, Mariachi Santa Cecilia continues to be a reference in the regional music scene, preserving the essence, strength, and feeling of Mexican music. Its history continues to be written with passion, discipline, and love for a tradition that has managed to transcend generations.
