Riviera Maya, Mexico — The Women’s Amateur Latin America 2025 (WALA) concluded on Sunday with an unforgettable chapter for women’s golf after an electrifying finish at the PGA Riviera Maya, within the Tulum Country Club. Colombian María José “Majo” Marín was crowned champion following a dramatic three-hole playoff against Barbadian Emily Odwin, in the first edition of the tournament organized in Mexico by The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation.

The tournament maintained absolute tension from the early stages of the playoff. Marín and Odwin finished tied after the 72 regulation holes, forcing a return to the 18th hole, which both played twice without breaking the tie. It was finally on the 10th hole that the Colombian achieved a solid par, while Odwin recorded six strokes, defining one of the most exciting finishes in the recent history of WALA.

Gonzalo Pan de Soraluce, Global Head of Golf Strategy, highlighted the difficulty of the course: “PGA Riviera Maya once again demonstrated how difficult it is to close a tournament on this demanding course, especially under pressure. We had an unforgettable finish and an exceptional champion.” He also thanked The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation for choosing this venue for the fifth edition of the championship.

The PGA Riviera Maya course reaffirmed its reputation as one of the most complex designs in Latin America. Its technical layout, surrounded by jungle, lakes, and cenotes, has caused all professional and amateur tournaments held there to historically be decided in playoffs, making it an ideal setting for high-drama finishes. It was also highlighted that the official results will be available at: walagolf.com.

Mark Lawrie, Director of The R&A, emphasized the organizational quality: “It has been an exceptional week. The course was impeccable, the operational support was exemplary, and the tournament unfolded in an environment of great professionalism.”

The victory of María José “Majo” Marín marks one of the most important achievements of her amateur career and positions her as one of the emerging great figures of Latin American golf. The first edition of WALA in Mexico will be recorded as one of the most exciting and technical of the competition.
