Quintana Roo, Mexico — A video circulating on social media has sparked outrage among residents of the Region 259 area in Quintana Roo after security cameras captured a man stealing men's underwear from a clothesline at a private residence.
The footage shows the individual intently observing the garments before taking several pairs of underwear and fleeing the scene with the stolen items. Although he attempted to avoid detection, the camera clearly captured his face and details of his clothing, allowing the affected family to request community assistance in identifying him.
At this time, it has not been confirmed whether a formal complaint has been filed with the State Attorney General's Office. However, neighbors have begun sharing the video in local groups to alert others about the incident and prevent further thefts.
What Penalties Could the Underwear Thief Face?
This type of conduct, while seemingly minor, constitutes the crime of simple theft, which can be aggravated if breaking and entering or malicious intent is demonstrated. According to the Quintana Roo Penal Code, theft without violence can be punished with prison sentences ranging from six months to three years. Unauthorized entry into private property can increase the penalty to up to six years, pursuant to Article 191. If recidivism or harassment is proven, additional aggravating circumstances could be applied.
Another Case in Puerto Morelos Involves a Minor's Garments
This incident follows another case from May 2025 in Puerto Morelos, where a man was captured on security cameras stealing women's underwear, including garments belonging to a 14-year-old minor. In that instance, the individual entered the clothes-drying area of a home and stole several intimate apparel items, which prompted a formal complaint to be filed with the State Attorney General's Office.
Both cases have generated concern among residents of Quintana Roo, who are demanding increased surveillance in residential areas, as well as decisive legal actions to curb this type of behavior, which, besides being illegal, violates the privacy and security of families.
