Cancun, Quintana Roo — A man and a child escaped injury Friday night after an apparent targeted shooting attempt in Cancun’s Supermanzana 103 neighborhood.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Talleres Avenue, also known as Puerto Juárez Avenue, near an area of occupied land where municipal police have frequently detected drug dealing activity.
According to witnesses who spoke with police, two individuals on a motorcycle approached a man walking with a child, estimated to be about 5 years old. The assailants began firing at the man, who released the child and ran toward the interior streets of the occupied land area.
Initial reports indicated the victim abandoned the child on the avenue when the shooting started. Residents protected the child until the mother arrived to retrieve him.
Investigators said the shooter experienced problems with the firearm, which apparently jammed, preventing the attack from being completed. The assailants then fled the scene.
Officers from the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic cordoned off the section of street where shell casings were found and later collected the evidence.
Police conducted searches of the area in an attempt to locate the motorcycle-riding suspects but were unsuccessful. It remains unknown whether the victim will file a formal complaint for the attempted homicide.
