Calderitas, Quintana Roo — Local artists from the southern Mexican Caribbean have stamped their art and filled the community of Calderitas with color through the “Magical Color Routes” program, specifically through mural painting.
Beatriz Alamilla Cruz, director of Tourism Development for the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, stated that through these social and artistic interventions full of color, the natural, cultural, and historical heritage that gives identity and pride to the Calderitas community is highlighted.
She said that “Magical Color Routes” is a program coordinated by the federal Secretary of Tourism (Sectur), in collaboration with companies like Comex and foundations like Corazón Urbano, to revitalize tourist destinations, especially Magical Towns and Neighborhoods, through artistic intervention of facades and the creation of murals to promote tourism, community pride, and social well-being.
The project consisted of the creation of 10 artistic murals and two color installations, intervened by five artists, including the Othonense muralist Gerardo Barragán, who brought life to the walls of the Calderitas House of Culture.
As part of the program, they conducted the workshop “Guardians of the Mural: Children Who Paint Their Community,” where 13 minors and adolescents learned about the value of muralism and expressed their creativity alongside teachers, families, and the team of Comex artists.
Alamilla Cruz emphasized that these actions reaffirm the commitment of Yensunni Martínez Hernández, municipal president of Othón P. Blanco, to work as a team and combine efforts between municipal, state, and federal governments with the tourism sector, to strengthen the destinations of the municipality, as well as to promote the creation of new tourism products, such as the Chetumal-Calderitas-Oxtankah Archaeological Route, which is underway in coordination with the mobility operator Chetubus and complemented by the gastronomic offerings of Calderitas restaurateurs.
The purpose is to continue promoting this point as a tourist destination, following a strong investment in the site.
