Tulum, Mexico — Two women sustained injuries after their motorcycle struck a low-hanging internet cable on Kukulcán Avenue near Juanek Avenue in Tulum, causing them to lose control and slide across the pavement.

The incident occurred when a fiber optic cable suddenly fell across the roadway just as the women were passing by on their motorcycle. The cable struck the driver directly in the neck, causing the most serious injuries including deep scrapes and friction burns.

The passenger suffered injuries to one hand while trying to free herself from the cable, along with abrasions on her arms and legs.

Witnesses reported the cable was suspended at an unusually low height, apparently due to faulty installation. The women said they were traveling at low speed, which prevented more severe consequences.

“If we had been going faster, the accident could have been fatal,” one of the women stated.

Tulum Hospital paramedics arrived as first responders and provided pre-hospital care to the injured women, who presented with various superficial wounds and friction burns. After medical evaluation, authorities ruled out fractures and determined hospital transfer was unnecessary, so they received treatment at the scene.

The incident caused alarm among drivers and pedestrians in the area as the motorcycle slid across the asphalt. The women said they attempted to brake when they noticed the danger but couldn’t avoid the cable.
