El Tintal — A highway accident this afternoon during rain on the El Tintal–Mérida highway resulted in a driver being seriously injured and a massive looting operation by residents from nearby communities.
According to initial reports, the driver of a trailer truck is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to leave the road and fall into a dry ravine from a height of more than 10 meters.
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene and successfully rescued the driver alive. He was urgently transported to the general hospital in Playa del Carmen.
While rescue teams and tow trucks worked to remove the wrecked vehicle, dozens of people arrived in cars and trucks from Playa del Carmen and El Tintal. Within minutes, they began looting the trailer's cargo, taking groceries, beer, liquor, furniture, televisions, mini-fridges, cell phones, speakers, Christmas products, and other appliances.
Elements of the National Guard, highway division, cordoned off the area to prevent another accident but did not intervene in the looting because the transport company had insured the merchandise. This facilitated the residents completely emptying the unit, which allowed the tow trucks to resume operations and clear the highway after more than four hours of blockage.
Finally, the trailer was declared a total loss, and the remains of the unit were transported to the corresponding impound lot, where they were made available to the authorities to continue with the investigation.
