Barcos Caribe, officially known as Impulsora Marítima de Quintana Roo y el Caribe and associated with former governor Roberto Borge, had its ferry service between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel suspended. This action was taken following an explosion on one of its ferries while docking. Following the incident in February 2018, the Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT) halted their operations until a safety report was provided by the Navy Ministry.
In March, the Superior Chamber of Administrative Justice began a contentious trial initiated by Barcos Caribe. The trial aimed to determine whether the company could regain its maritime route concession from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. A judicial report published on Tuesday, June 11, revealed case file 702/22-20-01-8 against the Navy Ministry. The Superior Chamber is examining the defendant authority's requirement in this case.
Barcos Caribe initiated the trial at the end of 2023 and was denied on January 29. The company appealed in April, leading the Superior Chamber to take on the case. Barcos Caribe argued that their trial had unique characteristics.
