Jorge Portilla Mánica, a candidate for the municipal presidency of Tulum under the Citizen Movement, has reported an armed attack on a private residence where his legal team was meeting.
This incident is the second such attack on members of the Citizen Movement in Tulum. In recent days, the campaign team has called on electoral authorities and both federal and state governments to safeguard the election. They fear that the incumbent candidate, Diego Castañón, and his supporters may resort to violence to disrupt the electoral process.
Earlier this week, the campaign team reported the first act of intimidation. A video surfaced showing a young man firing at a parked vehicle outside a building where a campaign team member lives. This incident took place on the road to Cobá, at the city's exit.
Portilla's campaign team has criticized the authorities for their failure to ensure a safe and civil electoral environment. They have called upon state and federal authorities once again to maintain peace and civility throughout the electoral process.
The team has also expressed gratitude to the National Guard for providing protection to Jorge Portilla. However, they believe this level of protection is inadequate given the violence they have experienced. They argue that the authorities' apparent indifference fosters a climate of violence and lawlessness, undermining respect for law and democracy on election day.
