Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Police on Isla Mujeres arrested a man identified as Joel “N” and recovered $2,000 in cash that had been reported stolen from a foreign tourist, authorities said.

The arrest came as officers from the island’s Tourist Police were carrying out surveillance patrols and received a report of a theft committed against a visitor.

Acting on the information provided, the officers coordinated with the C2 Control and Command Center, which tracked the suspect through video surveillance cameras installed at various points on the island.

The monitoring allowed officers to locate the man who had been reported, and police moved in to intercept him. Joel “N” was detained and turned over to the corresponding authorities, who will determine his legal status as the investigation proceeds.

In parallel, officers contacted the affected tourist to verify ownership of the recovered cash. After completing the required procedure, they returned the $2,000 to her.

The arrest and the recovery of the money resulted from coordination between the officers conducting surveillance and the personnel monitoring the C2 cameras.

So far, municipal authorities have not released further details about the specific circumstances of the reported theft or the legal situation the detainee will face, leaving the matter to the competent authority.
