Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde inaugurated the second phase of the Rueda Medina boardwalk on Saturday, marking a key milestone in the island’s urban modernization efforts.
The newly opened section, one of the main thoroughfares in the tourist destination, began operating at the start of the Easter holiday season. Officials timed the opening to avoid disrupting mobility and economic activity in one of the area’s busiest tourist zones, aiming to improve traffic flow for both residents and visitors while enhancing the destination’s image.
“Today we are delivering a major project, and that deserves recognition and celebration,” Gómez Ricalde said. “I want to thank the public works team for their leadership and dedication. Without their care, effort, and careful budgeting, these achievements wouldn’t be possible.”
The upgrades include replacing overhead wiring with an underground electrical system, installing hydraulic concrete, new LED streetlights, renovated sidewalks, planters, and signage. These improvements target better safety, services, and infrastructure in this crucial municipal area.
The mayor noted that opening the boardwalk supports the local economy during peak season by facilitating access to businesses and services along the route.
“This year we will build another boardwalk near the cultural center, reconstruct the cultural center, and much more,” she announced. “We are well advanced with electrification work. After completing it here, we decided to expand underground wiring throughout the island’s central zone. I ask for your patience—we will have construction projects throughout 2026.”
Gómez Ricalde added that after the holiday period ends, crews will resume pending work to complete the comprehensive boardwalk project, which involves a full modernization of this important tourist area.
“I have one year and five months left in office, and every day in government counts,” she said. “I ask for your patience so we can advance as quickly as possible on all our dreams for a more beautiful, stronger, and more stunning island.”
