Isla Mujeres, Q. Roo — The Municipal Government, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, through the General Directorate of Citizen Security, has initiated the Zero Fireworks Campaign “Prevention is the Best Protection,” aimed at raising awareness among the island community about the importance of avoiding fireworks use during the December holidays.
Leydi Hernández, Director of Social Proximity of Citizen Security, emphasized, “This informational campaign seeks to urge the population to respect Article 58, Section 6 of the Civic Justice Regulations, which specifies that the use of fireworks is an administrative offense.”
The municipal official highlighted that the use and sale of fireworks are not permitted, which is why flyer distributions and exhortations are being conducted for the community and merchants, as the safety of island families is a priority.
“We are visiting businesses, schools, and the most crowded points to inform islanders about the irreversible risks associated with fireworks use,” she stated.
Hernández reiterated, “We are raising awareness and inviting the population not to use fireworks during these posadas and December festivities, which is why we will also reinforce surveillance operations and remind the public that they can report any situation or irregular sale to the emergency number 911.”
Additionally, Leydi Hernández called on parents not to allow their children to use fireworks, as they are very dangerous explosives that can cause accidents.
